The
Mining Family and Culture
The families living in Sewell have been the
core of the mining and El Teniente social settlement. From a historical-social
point of view, the present copper worker and his family group are
the direct descendents of the Chilean pioneers who started the industrial
operation of El Teniente in 1905, almost a century ago.
They were characterized by their lasting
permanence in the same camp; the formation of large families linked
by blood relations; a common past; their social, labor and salary
promotion, and their natural renewal through offspring (children
and grandchildren) who are still working at El Teniente.
For decades, many Chileans and foreigners
were born, grew up, and died in the "city of stairways",
remaining there throughout their lives.
